Miscellaneous / Nokia 2520 - how to get into Diagnostics to repair
« Last post by norman on June 12, 2018, 09:00:31 am »
The Nokia 2520 runs the Windows RT operating system.

If the 2520 won't boot into a normal screen then :-

Turn on. When you see the word Nokia then power off. Do not let it finish the boot.

Repeat three times.

Apple / MacBook - sudden power supply issues
« Last post by norman on May 24, 2018, 12:53:31 pm »
This has just occurred. 22nd May 2018.

Running a MacBook Pro with a non-Apple power supply which has been working happily for two years. All of a sudden it no longer works and will not charge or connect.

After a visit to an Apple repairer it seems that the requirement to use only Apple products has somehow been invoked. Replacing the PSU with the official Apple Magsafe 2 resulted in a restored system.

The non-Apple PSU works and will charge every so often, say 1 in 100 connection. But not good enough for our requirements.

General discussions / GDPR - it will affect you
« Last post by norman on May 17, 2018, 04:30:11 pm »
The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and was finally approved by the EU Parliament on 14 April 2016. It strengthens the law on holding personal data. It applies throughout the EU including the UK (even after Brexit).

'Personal data' means any data which can uniquely identify an individual, such as name, address, telephone number, email address, NI number etc.

If you store any data like this then it applies to YOU.

To sum it up in a few words - you are responsible for the security and accuracy of any personal data that you hold and are to treat it responsibly. If anything goes wrong then you must inform of the problem within 72 hours to your Supervisory Authority. There are simply no excuses for failing to comply with the Regulations.

There is a notable change from having to Opt Out of communications to now having to Opt In. The requirement to respond to a request for a copy of personal data is reduced to 30 days. There is also a requirement to 'forget' an individual and remove all traces from your systems.

It is important to realise that if you store data on a third party computer which is not under your direct control, such as on the web, then you are still responsible if anything goes wrong.

The Enforcement date was 25 May 2018.

This law is being implemented in the UK so you MUST conform to it even after Brexit and it will be a requirement when working with EU customers. There is a maximum penalty of ?20,000,000 or 4% of turnover for breaches.

The homepage for the EU legislation is at https://www.eugdpr.org

The page on the Information Commissioners Office relating to this is at https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/

As a company we only store a limited amount of personal data, usually only a contact name, address, phone number and email address. Our Supervisory Authority is the Information Commissioners Office at https://ico.org.uk

TPN Invoicing / TPN SOAP 2.99 released - 07/03/2018
« Last post by norman on March 08, 2018, 04:56:51 pm »
We discovered a bug in the TPN Web Services that occurred in rare instances when returning POD images.

It only occurred if there were multiple POD records for the consignment and the first record did not contain an image. In this case no image or POD information was returned.

This problem has now been fixed by TPN.

The TPN SOAP program was not at fault but has been updated to give detailed failure information so that in future any anomalies can be reported and resolved quicker.

TPN Invoicing / Invoices cut off at the bottom
« Last post by norman on February 16, 2018, 12:53:12 pm »
The invoices print, but the total at the bottom is cut off.

This is symptomatic of the printer default paper size being wrong and set to Letter instead of A4.

Check your printer settings and reselect the printer in Setup/Printers.

Windows / Windows 10 - An app default was reset message.
« Last post by norman on January 19, 2018, 04:37:20 pm »
An app caused a problem with the default app setting for ..... files, so it was reset to .....

This keeps on popping up, resetting image files, browsers etc to the Microsoft default versions.

This has just started on Windows 10. It does things like change your default browser to Edge. It is really annoying.

This details the problem and gives a solution -

http://techdows.com/2016/02/prevent-windows-10-resetting-file-associations.html

Basically it's caused by Microsoft update KB3135173

See -

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3032751/microsoft-windows/windows-10-forced-update-kb-3135173-changes-browser-and-other-defaults.html

A lot of this appears to be due to the Windows 10 Falls Update downloading about 4GB. If you keep getting this try to load and it seems to be an issue then:-

Go into C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete the Download folder.

Raspberry Pi / Spectre and Meltdown bugs
« Last post by norman on January 18, 2018, 04:04:45 pm »
The Raspberry Pi cannot be affected by these bugs as it has a different type of CPU architecture.

No update is needed.
